Selam Gebrekidan is an investigative reporter for The New York Times. She has reported on the British criminal justice system, the centuries-long trail of Haitian debt, corruption in South Africa, and the misuse of European farm subsidies. She was also a driving force behind the newspaper’s investigative efforts during the first year of the coronavirus pandemic. For that work, she shared in The New York Times’s Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 2021.
Before joining The New York Times, Gebrekidan was a data and enterprise reporter for Reuters, where she won the One World Media Award for International Journalist of the Year in 2017. The award was given for her trilogy documenting the journeys of three groups of migrants from Eritrea.
